The Midnight Piper
The sun lies cloaked in shadows
And half the moon is fading
The midnight piper emerges
Her raven hair sways gently
Her pale skin reflects Luna's light
She pulls out her flute and begins to play
The notes are forged of silver
The finest silver, encrusted with jewels
Smooth and sweet, lifting into the sky
Slowly the song reaches over the land
But not a soul is removed from their dreams
The eerie melody exists in a place all its own
She stops to breathe the cool summer air
And continues playing away
Pouring her heart into the soulful tune
The climax approaches
Notes come out louder, more powerfully
The world seems to still for that moment
Then the last euphonic tear
Rolls down the sky's face
And the piper returns to the darkness
The night is despondently quiet
And the crickets weep at the silence
Mourning the loss of their muse
But not to worry--
She will return soon
